Tiskilwa’s Gallery on Galena to Open on July 4th

What could be more appropriate than a visit to Tiskilwa’s former American Legion Hall on the Fourth of July? Situated at the far north end of the village (550 North Galena), this building has been converted into the Gallery on Galena by Tiskilwa Historical Society. On Saturday, July 4, it will be open to the public during special hours from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Visitors will find that half of the gallery space is dedicated to service men and women from Tiskilwa and its surrounding countryside. The south half of the gallery depicts a country schoolroom, complete with books such as “Fun with Dick and Jane” and several 1930s pull-down maps –with Siam and French Indo-China still in on the chart.

Following social-distancing guidelines from the Illinois Department of Public Health, a volunteer staffer will welcome visitors at the Gallery. There will be a limit of ten guests at a time.

Vietnam veteran Lee Miller, Tiskilwa, happened along Main Street just as staffers were moving his dress uniform to the Gallery on Galena. From 1965 to 1967, Lee served as a Specialist 4th Class in the Fifth Army. He’s standing at the Museum on Main, near the recently installed 1911 cornerstone from the old Tiskilwa High School.
