Salute to Veterans Featured on November 11 at Tiskilwa’s Museum on Main

The Tiskilwa Historical Society’s annual program, Salute to Veterans, falls exactly on Veterans Day this year, at 7:00 in the Museum on Main. Mike Johnson of Princeton will focus on the participation of local doughboys in World War I as well as America’s efforts to rebuild war-ravaged Europe in the years following the war.

For his military program at Museum on Main on November 11, Mike Johnson will set up samples the meals U.S. troops ate. From the left, “Slum” (beef stew), “Stars and Stripes” (bacon and baked beans) and “Paint and Worms” (spaghetti noodles and tomato sauce).

In a special feature, Mike and his grandsons will display a large collection of war artifacts that Mike has accumulated over the years. He will also show “preserved” samples of G.I. food, items from the American Red Cross and Salvation Army, posters, uniforms and head gear, plus a few surprises. Following the presentation, visitors are invited to get up close and personal with all the Mike’s displays before heading downstairs for refreshments in the galleries.

Previous to the program, the public is invited to the Grand Opening of Tiskilwa’s Gallery on Galena, just south of the railroad tracks at 505 Galena Street, from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m.
