Tiskilwa’s Memorial Day Ceremony in East Park on May 27 to Feature World War I Artifacts and Open Ho

The return native son Harry Quick’s World War I uniform is one highlight of Tisklwa’s Memorial Day Ceremony that will honor all veterans. Immediately following the ceremony in the East Park, refreshments will be served at the former American Legion Hall, soon-to-be Gallery on Galena.

The program on Monday, May 27, begins with the Presentation of Colors at 11:00 a.m. in Tiskilwa’s East Park shelter. U.S. Navy Veteran Jennifer Fisher will serve as Master of Ceremonies for the event that includes brief remarks by two other veterans with Tiskilwa connections as well as the laying a wreath at the village’s two war memorial monuments. Jennifer advises attendees to bring a lawn chair. She has organized the program with the assistance of Tiskilwa Historical Society and the Tiskilwa Community Association.

In the featured event in the park, Mike Johnson of Princeton will be donating several military items originally belonging to Tiskilwa doughboys Harry Quick and Milford Olds.

The Tiskilwa Historical Society invites members of the community then to drive the north end of Tiskilwa to enjoy snacks and a “walkabout” at the former American Legion Hall. The Open House will be from 12:00 to 2:00, and is billed as “As Is” to show progress made since last fall in restoring the old hall. When the project is completed, this museum annex will house numerous items from the society’s overflow collection of military artifacts, as well as a set-up to replicate a country school house.

Immediately following the May 27 Memorial Day ceremony in the East Park, the Tiskilwa Historical Society is hosting an “As Is” Open House at the former American Legion Hall, near the tracks at the north end of the village.
